Clamp On Multimeters use an Incudtion Clamp to measure the electromagnetic field generated when current flows in a conductor. Simply clamping the jaw around the conductor allows the current to be measured without the need to make physical contact with the conductor and does not require power be shutoff. Clamp on testers work with either bare or insulated conductors but must be used on the hot leg only, if the hot and neutral conductors are in the same line (such as romex) the current flow in both directions will cancel out and not provide an accurate reading
